Fire by Kristin Cashore

taylir — August 11, 2010 - 7:28pm

Fire by Kristin Cashore

From Goodreads:

Beautiful creatures called monsters live in the Dells. Monsters have the shape of normal animals: mountain lions, dragonflies, horses, fish. But the hair or scales or feathers of monsters are gorgeously colored-- fuchsia, turquoise, sparkly bronze, iridescent green-- and their minds have the power to control the minds of humans.

Seventeen-year-old Fire is the last remaining human-shaped monster in the Dells. Gorgeously monstrous in body and mind but with a human appreciation of right and wrong, she is hated and mistrusted by just about everyone, and this book is her story.

My Review:

This book is delicious!!  I love it.  It has a strong female charater, my new favorite male lead in a book (Brigin), and beautiful setting.  I listened to the book on audio and it was done really well.  I normally shy away from books that seem to description heavy but this one was done just right.  Enough information about a new land but not so much that you were bogged down by the details.   What surprised me was the real life aspects of the book.  How do I explain this??  Sometimes young adult fantasy books leave out discussion of everyday problems teens have to deal with, like getting your period.  Although it may turn some readers off it was fascinating how it brought Fire to life, to talk about her feelings of  womanhood as well as how to fight with body and mind in a war that could destroy her home.  It had mature themes but was a wild ride of war and love in a land of beauty.  I would recommend this for 13 and up.

Vanessa

P.S.

I am currently listening to Graceling and loving it.  So far I am for Katsa and Po!
