2011 Fox Cities Reads

The fifth annual Fox Cities Reads is under way!  We are pleased to announce that this year we will be reading two books by Luis Alberto Urrea: The Devil's Highway and Into the Beautiful North.

The Devil's Highway, a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2005 for nonfiction, tells the story of 26 men who in 2001 crossed the U.S./Mexico border in the Sonoran Desert in an area known as the Devil's Highway.  Of the 26 men, only 12 survived.

In the the Beautiful North is the story of 19 year old Nayeli, who works at a taco shop in her Mexican village and dreams of her father who left for the United States years earlier.  It occurs to her that there are almost no men left in the village as they have all gone north.  She concocts a plan to venture north and find men to bring back to her village.

As part of the Fox Cities Reads, author Luis Alberto Urrea will appear at venues throughout the Fox Cities, including the Menasha Public Library, where he will speak April 13th at 7 pm.  Multpiple copies of these titles are available for checkout.  To reserve a copy of a book or to learn more about the event, please contact the Reference Desk at 967-3690.
