"The Merchant of Venice"
Shakespeare on the Fox
Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, Appleton
7:30 pm
The American Players Theatre will present The
Merchant of Venice on November 1 at the Fox Cities PAC. The
Merchant of Venice considers bigotry in the
treatment of one group of people by another. Differences are both
religious and ethnic. In the midst of the Venetian
state, perhaps for purposes of trade and money-lending alone, Europeans shape a social structure that barely tolerates the Jews. The
dominant society’s treatment of “otherness” is exposed and to a large extent
challenged by the figure of Shylock.
