What is a Teacher?

Family Spot — August 27, 2010 - 4:27pm

Teachers are more than the subjects they teach! Just follow the ABC's...

  • Actor. You prepare for each class as if it were a command performance.
  • Builder. You build in the wonder and the fascination to inspire tomorrow's teachers, politicians, and parents.
  • Caretaker and caregiver. Many students excel because a special person helped them along the way: a teacher.
  • Director. You're in charge of your classroom.
  • Enforcer. You enforce the classroom rules.
  • Fighter. Sometimes you have to take a stand for what you believe is best for a child.
  • Giver. You give of your time and of yourself—in and out of the classroom.
  • Helper. Perhaps the most important help you give is helping students learn to help themselves.
  • Instructor. Truly, this is the heart of teaching.
  • Joiner. You need a support network, so you reach out to colleagues.
  • Keeper. You keep track of attendance, grades, permission slips, line leaders, library books, mittens, and much more!
  • Listener. Every day you listen to your students to find out what their interests are. Then you build these into your lessons.
  • Magician. As you teach students to read, write, calculate, and investigate, you unlock the magic for them.
  • Nurturer. You care for your students like you would care for blooming flowers.
  • Optimist. You see the good things happening in schools.
  • Psychologist. You're a keen observer of kids.
  • Questioner. You ask your students thought-provoking questions; then you guide them in searching out the answer.
  • Role model. You let your students know that you care and that you believe in them.
  • Strategist. A well-planned lesson helps you get your students' attention—and keep it.
  • Tutor. You give your students individual attention whenever you can. You also find times when they can tutor each other.
  • Umpire. You're fair, firm, and consistent.
  • Victor. You celebrate your teaching victories, and you congratulate your colleagues on their successes too.
  • Writer. When you have an activity or a project that works well, you write it up and submit it to a teaching magazine!
  • Xerox specialist. Who else can unjam paper?
  • Yourself. Your students know and love you as a person.
  • Zealot. You do your job with enthusiasm and energy—it's the most important job in the world!

Primary Sources

Family Spot — August 25, 2010 - 7:39pm

With the digital age many people turn to Wikipedia or Google to find their information. Not everything on the World Wide Web is true or trustworthy, especially when papers are due. The library owns hundreds of great books to assist students while writing papers. But sometimes it's not easy to get to the library, find the books, checkout the books and read the books. Other times when writing papers, you want the students to find primary sources. Primary sources are going back the beginning - the beginning of an event, a speech, a time in history. The Library of Congress is here to help! They have a great website filled with free, primary sources. They offer themed resources, lesson plans, presentations and so much more! Take some time and cruise through history.

Welcome Back!

Family Spot — August 14, 2010 - 11:11am

Welcome back, teachers!

We're gearing up to for the upcoming school year and wondering how can we help you? We have a special Parent/Teacher section just for you at Menasha Public Library! In the P/T collection, we have resource books and specialized kits: Kinder Kits, Author Adventure Kits and Book Club Express. We also have booklists you can borrow at the Info Desk. You can check these items out with your teacher card. Don't have a teacher card? Come on over the Children's Room and sign up for one!

We also can create Teacher Packs for you and your classroom. You'll need to share your school and class information with us so we can gather books and materials for you. Once every six weeks the MJSD van makes a stop at the library. They will pick up your library box and deliver it to you. Teacher packs are handy for additional reading material related to the curriculum or just for fun! Call us at (920) 967-3670 or email us at MPL-Childrens [at] menashalibrary [dot] org

See you soon!

Save at Menasha Public Library

Family Spot — July 12, 2010 - 3:40pm

We know you value the services and resources provided by the Menasha Public Library, but just how much are those services worth? How much would you pay out-of-pocket if the library didn't exist, or if these services and resources weren't available at no cost?

Take a moment and reflect on your library use over the past month, then plug those numbers into the form on this page. This page will calculate the total value you received related to the items you checked out and the services and resources you used.

In the Children's Room, ask about our special services designed to save you time, effort and money! We put together great kits for you and your students. Author Adventure Kits, Book Club Express and Teacher Packs are available for you! Just ask at the Children's Room Info Desk. We'd love help!

Finding a Classroom Read Aloud

Family Spot — June 29, 2010 - 10:11am

School might be out for the summer, but next year is just around the corner. Summer is a time for relaxation, reflection and planning. Are you looking for read alouds to share with your class? In the Children's Room, stop by the Info Desk and ask the librarians about their favorite reads. We also own a helpful bibliography binder for Preschool aged students and School aged students. Each binder is filled with great books to include in your school library, book recommendations and read alouds.

Sometimes, it's hard to difficult to visit the library. Visit our online books section! We have lists of great books for you and your students to enjoy. Different catagories can be found on the left side panel.

Other online resource is the Living Lord Library Curriculum Materials Center from Minnesota State University Moorhead. They created special awards and pages about classroom read alouds. Their awards are the Wanda Gag Book Award for toddlers to age 8 and the Comstock Book Award for ages 8-12.

Let us know what you like to read in your classrooms! You can leave a comment below. Happy reading!

Make a Splash in Your Classroom!

Family Spot — June 10, 2010 - 10:33am

Are you teaching this summer?

We have a great program for you! It's Make a Splash: READ at your Childcare and/or Classroom. Sign-up your center or class at the Info Desk in the Children's Room at the Menasha Public Library. You will receive a folder with a June poster, a July poster, a classroom sign-up sheet, stickers and instructions.

How does a class participate? You will record each of your student's names on your own sign-up sheet. Each time a child reads, writes or participates in a literary project, they get to put a sticker on the monthly poster. At the end of each month, give the child a prize courtesy of the Menasha Public Library. Children can participate in the classroom program and individually at the Menasha Public Library program. They receive different prizes, too!

If you have any questions or would like to sign-up, stop in at the Children's Room Info Desk. We can't wait to see you!
