Social Media in Education?

Family Spot — December 15, 2009 - 12:29pm

One of the Childrens_Room twitter friends, cwkids, passed along a great webpage from their twitter friend web20classroom. The webpage is 85+ Resources: Educator Guide for Integrating Social Media.  The webpage gives articles, videos and links about the importance of social media along with social media tools and resources. The webpage author created the page as "a good starting point" and "by no means exhaustive." They hope to continue to update the website with additional information and resources.

You can also find resources at Menasha Public Library by going to our online catalog. Type in "Web 2.0" or "Online social networks" under subject search or even specific networks like "Twitter" or "Facebook" under keyword search.

Watch Picture Books Online

Family Spot — October 27, 2009 - 12:01pm

The Screen Actors Guild Foundation seeks to assist, educate and inspire actors and actresses. SAG has also committed themselves to championing children’s literacy. On their website Storyline Online, celebrities read picture books to you!

With Halloween around the corner, check out Guji Guji, by Chih Yuan Chen; read by Robert Guillaume, Sophie's Masterpiece, by Eileen Spinelli; read by CCH Pounder, Stellaluna, by Janell Cannon; read by Pamela Reed, or The Night I Followed the Dog, by Nina Laden; read by Amanda Bynes.

Besides reading books, the website offers information about the reader and activity guides you can download. Each book also gives a running time, so if you have a schedule you need to keep it's easy to work it into your school day.

Do Guys Like to Read?

Family Spot — September 21, 2009 - 7:20pm

Guys love to read! Jon Scieszka introduces a fun and creative look at what guys like to read. Jon's website is all about motivating guys to read and talk about the books they read. At the bottom of the homepage you'll find a list of books under such themes as people being transformed into animals, dragons, historical figures and so much more!

Other pages give guys a chance to see what other guys read and to suggest a book that they read. Jon also gives instructions on setting up your own Guys Read Field Office (aka your own local guys read group). You can follow your own road or get ideas from the website. For example, check out the list of authors with websites. To help your local group you can put together your own Guys Read Library. You can download bookplates, bookmarks and labels.

If you're looking for...

multiple copies of books to read, check out the library! You can place holds on items from all over the Winnefox system with your Menasha Library Card. You can also reserve some space to meet by contacting our library office at (920) 967-3662.

The Children's Room also offers Book Bibliographies. We have one binder for elementary schoolers and one binder for preschoolers. They are packed full of different themes that have been requested over the years. Stop by the Children's Information Desk and take a look.
